The race start loop takes you around a big field and over several cattle guards. In fact, on the pre ride the weekend before, I almost ran into one of the longhorns on the trail. From the start loop you fly through a barn, scurry around a stock tank, and pop into the woods for some twisty single track. Yee Haw!!
I had a great start off the front of the pack and then had some mechanicals with my shifting once I hit the woods. Standing in the “mechanics stance” (bent over, pulling on the chain/derailer and random cables on the bike) alongside the trail I could see ALL the girls and even some guys from the class back zip past me. As soon as I got my bike working again, it was time to turn on the jets and make up some lost time. I was mad, and now I had a reason to go hard for the chase. It took me almost 2 laps to catch up to Bibi, she was riding strong! Just keeping a consistant strong pace can really help make up for lost time. Somehow I managed to keep it together and pull off the fastest woman’s time of the day.

“Eye of the Tiger” raced and took an impressive 2nd place against her competitors despite a bent front derailer and a leap off the trail.

Here she is doing a reinactment of the fall she took off of the steep edge of the trail. Kids, don’t try this at home!

I definitely don’t race for the money, otherwise I would be in a huge debt ;) but this weekend had a GREAT payout. A huge thank you to Doc Nolan and his wife Susan for putting up an extra $1000 for the Expert Women’s prize purse. I’m just happy if I can get my entry fee paid back after a race, but this win actually paid for that, gas, and dinner! Thanks Doc!!
